A wild tale of movie-making, murder, drugs, cults, and dinosaurs.

My biggest project to date: A feature-length pseudo-documentary about the making of the film Jurassic Park III (2001).

I’ve wanted to make a longer-form thing for years, and produce something that had a bit more to it than just a standard video or meme or whatever. This is the result. It started out as a sort of parody of an Adam Curtis film; slowly and mysteriously taking the viewer on a journey, and having these ominous twists and revelations. Then it gradually got more ambitious as I wanted to write and shoot my own live action elements, and include some suprise appearances from actors and stuff.

I think the film falls under the umbrellas of docufiction, mockumentary, metafiction, and Hyperreality (the condition in which what is real and what is fiction are seamlessly blended together so that there is no clear distinction between where one ends and the other begins) — I didn’t think that distinction was that hard to see, but comments I’ve received make me think some people can’t tell in some parts.

This thing is packed with references to films/tv/books that I love. Some of it is almost shot-for-shot remakes of things like The Sopranos episode where Tony takes peyote in the desert — “I GET IT!”, and The End of Evangelion (1997) with the space stuff with Johnston and the Spinosaurus near the finale.

I had HUGE amounts of fun creating this, and it was a wonderful distraction from the pandemic (I think, subconsciously, I was almost unable to accept the absurdity of that disease just appearing and taking over all our lives, and I tried to make something even MORE absurd to take away some of its power in my brain?) Creatively, it was the most intense thing I’ve done. I’d find myself waking up in the middle of the night, grabbing a notepad, and just writing entire ten-minute long sequences and laughing to myself.

There’s like 30mins of deleted stuff. I might cut them into a “Making of...” video along with some thoughts about wtf it’s actually all about, and put that out soon as a little companion piece ︎
